A novel objective oriented methodology for marine engine–turbocharger matching

The matching of the turbocharging system with a marine engine is an essential undertaking due to turbocharger effects on performance, emissions and response, whilst limited data availability during ship design phase renders it challenging. This study aims at developing novel methodology for single multiple turbochargers connected in parallel engines. employs compressor parametric modelling tool zero-dimensional model, taking into account operational profile components flow limitations. used generation database families that can be investigated procedure. model one cylinder block mapping performance parameters wide operating envelope by response surfaces. developed implemented case propulsion Aframax tanker. annual fuel consumption load diagram upper limit are employed as main objectives selection system. derived results demonstrate effective reducing brake specific up 5%. identified led reduction range 1.3%–5.3% compared reference engine, providing more expanded diagram. overcomes limitations manual turbocharger–matching process decision support satisfy contradictory objectives.
